Choosing the Right Bathroom Flooring Before a Remodel

When it comes to remodeling your home, the first thing that pops into your mind is cost, followed by thinking, “can I do it myself?” Either way you go, bathroom remodeling in Jackson, MS must be done correctly and by using the right materials to ensure enjoyment for years to come. Just as selecting the best cabinets, sinks and other fixtures is important, so is choosing the right bathroom flooring before a remodel—there are a number of available flooring options out there, each offering different looks and textures.

The more commonly considered bathroom flooring materials include ceramic tile, vinyl and carpet, but some are better suited for the job while others have the potential to cause you issues in the future.

  • Ceramic tile: A simple yet elegant style, ceramic tile is a popular choice for bathroom flooring because of its large selection of available shapes, sizes, colors, finishes and textures. Ceramic tile has to be created, but it’s a product of natural materials, which comes about through the process of heating and cooling natural clay and minerals. As floor tiles instead of wall tiles, the ceramic stone, having been sandblasted, is designed with more grip-like texture to prevent slipping and to provide better traction, especially when the title gets wet. If easy maintenance, an economical price tag and a pleasant appearance is what you are looking for, then a ceramic tile is a fantastic choice for your bathroom floors.

  • Hardwood/Vinyl: Vinyl planks are made to resemble hardwood so you can have the beauty of wood flooring in a typically moist area like a bathroom, all without worrying if the “wood” might rot. The features of good quality vinyl planks will be the same size and look remarkably like real hardwood planks, beveled edges and all. And, basic vinyl is easy to keep clean and this type of flooring is sealed well to help prevent moisture damage. If a realistic hardwood is the natural look you seek for your bathroom, vinyl is a highly affordable and durable alternative for a realistic appearance.

  • Carpet: While nice to have in the bedroom, a regular carpet material is one type of flooring you may not want to use for your bathroom remodeling in Jackson, MS. Having a carpeted floor in the bathroom where moisture lingers will undoubtedly lead to the formation of nasty mold and mildew. That is, unless you install individual water, mildew and stain resistant carpet tiles that can be easily removed for cleaning. These water resistant carpet tiles are made with backings that block water from seeping through, much like bathroom mats. On that note, soft bathroom mats and rugs, which can be put down on top of vinyl or ceramic tile flooring, are good alternatives to laying down permanent carpet.
