The holidays can be an exciting yet stressful time. This is especially true if you’re having guests over to your home. While you’re likely looking forward to spending time with your loved ones, getting your home ready for their visit can be a challenge.
One way to channel that nervous energy is through completing some holiday home improvement tasks. Since Christmas is getting closer, you probably don’t want to undertake an entire kitchen remodeling project right now, but some easy holiday projects can allow you to be productive and spruce up your home ahead of the guests you’ll be receiving.
Here are some easy holiday home improvement projects to consider this season.
Clean up clutter
It’s easy to accumulate clutter throughout the year, which makes December a great time to sort it and get rid of some of it. You can go through areas of your home that are bogged down with too many items and separate the items into three categories: keep, trash or donate.
The holidays are the best time for giving, so be sure to donate items that you don’t want to your local thrift store so that other people can use them.
Check and fix your seal points
Colder temperatures mean your home’s HVAC system will be hard at work this winter. To maximize energy efficiency, check the seal points in your home, such as around the outside of doors and windows.
Visually inspect the seals; then put your hand over the edges of the windowsill and doorframe, and see if you can feel any cold air seeping in. If you notice a draft of cold air coming in, you can use a caulking gun along the edges to create a better seal on your doors or windows.
Keep in mind that this is more of a temporary solution, and it’s not a substitute for getting your doors or windows replaced.
Change your furnace’s air filters
When it comes to easy holiday projects, they don’t get much simpler than changing your HVAC system’s air filters. You should change your air filters every one to three months. If you haven’t changed your air filters in a while, now is the perfect time to do that.
This is because your furnace will be working overtime during the chillier months, and you want your home’s air to be as clean as possible for any guests you may be entertaining.
Try some different decor
One relatively painless holiday home improvement project is integrating some different home decor. You can focus on the accents instead of the big items. For example, you could try some different throw pillows on your couch, or you could purchase a new rug.
Maybe you find your living room curtains have become a bit drab, and you want to update them. You could even acquire some new blankets for your living room so that your guests can be comfortable and cozy while they spend time with you.
