Signs Your Kitchen May Be Stuck in the Past

Kitchen remodels are a major undertaking. This is why most homeowners wait for longer than a decade after doing a kitchen remodel to do another one. If you outdid yourself in your initial remodel, you might be comfortable waiting for a couple of decades before undertaking another remodel. However, your old kitchen might have already started showing its age by now. For an older home, it’s never too soon to start a kitchen makeover. Here are signs your kitchen may be stuck in the past.

1. Your Appliances Are No Longer Complex

It’s no secret that technology has come a long way over the last couple of decades. This means that today’s kitchen appliances are more sophisticated and functionally superior. Therefore, they can do more tasks faster and use energy more efficiently. They are also smart kitchen appliances that are interconnected and let you control them via mobile apps and smart interfaces.

If you have old appliances in your kitchen, they likely are no longer complex. Thus, it’s time for you to consider undertaking an old house kitchen remodel. This will allow you to install fully integrated appliances that blend with your cabinetry to create a seamless look.

2. Sponge-Painted Walls and Borders

Having sponge-painted walls and borders was the trendiest style in the ’80s. However, the times have changed, and this "once trendy" wall finishing style is now out of fashion. If you have sponge-painted walls and borders in your kitchen, it’s a sign that your kitchen is stuck in the ’80s. You should consider having it remodeled and its walls’ finished with new color palettes.

3. Oak and Pine Cabinets

Another kitchen trend from the ’80s is having oak and pine cabinets. A kitchen with oak and pine cabinetry screams old school, and it now translates to a lack of imagination and appreciation for the beauty of life. You shouldn’t be afraid to do a 1980s kitchen remodel to update your cabinetry, as it’s more affordable than you think if you opt for refacing. This will involve laminating the cabinet boxes and changing the door and drawer to give new life to your kitchen.

4. Antique Hardware

Refacing your kitchen cabinetry is pointless if you will still retain antique hardware like brass knobs and pulls and exposed hinges. When doing the cabinet refacing, you need to replace the antique hardware with newer, sleeker options like brushed nickel and stainless steel. This will make the modern look of your kitchen feel complete.

5. Fussy Geometric Floors

In the ’80s, homeowners loved fussy geometric patterns or faux brick for their floors that look out of place in a modern kitchen. Although linoleum was breakthrough flooring for its time, it has been surpassed by newer superior materials recently. Consider installing gorgeous vinyl plank flooring that’s less complicated to make your kitchen look bigger in your old house kitchen remodel.
